Founded in 1987 under the name Mercadagro International Corporation by Alfredo Lardizabal Sr., MIC Food® is a three-generation family enterprise specializing in ready-to-use frozen tropical food products. In 1985, Alfredo arrived to Miami from Honduras wanting to improve the life of his family, which at the time included 6 young children. With the support of his loving wife Cirabel Lardizabal and commitment to family in mind, Alfredo sought out to create opportunity in the United States.
Noticing the preparation labor and time needed to enjoy authentic recipes using fresh plantain and wanting to share these traditional tropical dishes with others in the community, he began testing methods of freezing green plantain at various stages of maturity in his home freezer. After perfecting the recipe and months of perseverance requesting an appointment, he approached the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the U.S. with his idea. It was there that his idea was met with resounding acceptance and the frozen plantain industry began, forming a strategic partnership now lasting over 35 years.
Alfredo Lardizabal Sr.’s commitment to creating opportunity while creating a positive social impact on community started with the dedicated team of 10 people in the main sourcing plant and has now grown to directly employing over 300 people and providing consistent employment for over 750 people in the other plants in Central and South America. MIC Food® remains committed to improving the lives of its team members, their families and surrounding communities through training programs, promoting from within, wellness programs and other employee packages.
MIC Food® is a leading nationwide supplier of prepared frozen tropical fruits and vegetables to restaurants, in-store delis, food manufacturers and private label brands and continues to hold its position as the number one importer of frozen plantain products.
